Super Bowl Matchups & Predictions
And then there were four. Just four teams remain in the battle to reach Super Bowl LIV. The AFC and NFC championship games are set for next Sunday and soon we’ll have the two teams that will play for the 2020 Lombardi Trophy. Here’s a look at the potential matchups and a predicted winner of each.
The Matt LaFleur Bowl
A year ago, Green Bay first-year head coach Matt LaFleur was the Titans offensive coordinator. A Titans-Packers Super Bowl would pit LaFleur against his old boss, Tennessee head coach Mike Vrabel. No one expected the Titans to get this far, but there is a strong history of No. 6 seeds having success.
The Packers were a sixth-seed in 2011 and went on to win the Super Bowl. The Titans certainly could do the same. Running back Derrick Henry has been outstanding. In two playoff games, the former Alabama star has rushed for 377 yards. QB Ryan Tannehill hasn’t had to do much. In fact, he became the first quarterback since Terry Bradshaw to throw for fewer than 100 yards in consecutive playoff wins.
With Green Bay finishing 23rd against the run during the regular season, Henry could have a field day against the Packers. Don’t forget the Titans have only given up 12.5 points a game in the postseason. Tennessee would be Green Bay’s worst nightmare… TENNESSEE 21, GREEN BAY 17
Similar Builds
In putting together a Super Bowl-worthy lineup, the San Francisco 49ers turned to former 9-time All-Pro safety John Lynch as their general manager. Slowly but surely, Lynch has pieced together the makings of a championship lineup. It’s very similar to that of Tennessee.
Both teams rely heavily on running the football, but also have very capable quarterbacks. Ryan Tannehill took over in Tennessee when the Titans were 2-4 and barely had any chance of making the AFC title game. Jimmy Garoppolo completed 69 percent of his passes for 3,978 yards and 27 touchdowns this season leading the 49ers to 13 wins.
The difference is on defense where San Francisco was No. 1 against the pass this season allowing opponents only 169.2 yards per game. The Niners were also second in total defense (281.8) and allowed just 19.4 points a game. In the division round, the 49ers held Vikings RB Dalvin Cook to just 18 yards rushing. On the other end, San Francisco ran for 186 yards and two touchdowns in the 27-10 victory over Minnesota.
If there is one team that can slow down Derrick Henry, it’s San Francisco. For that reason, a Titans-49ers Super Bowl would go to… SAN FRANCISCO 24, TENNESSEE 20
