Betting Guide, Glossary & Terms

Just like anything else you do you should know the basics of betting before you start, so here are the most common terms.

Against the spread: The spread is usually determined by those who gamble at the Vegas casinos and other various factors and is something you should easily find on a betting site. The challenging part of this type of bet is not only do you have to pick the team you have to figure out how much they win by. So for example if a team is picked to win by 8.2, you vote with the spread and they only win by 6 that means you lose the bet.

Money line: The main advantage to this type of bet is you can still win some if you don’t cover the spread.

Over-under: This is a unique type of bet because you aren’t betting who will win but how many points will be scored by the two teams combined.

Outright: This is the simplest type of bet there is. You choose one team to win and there is no spread you have to worry about and you either win or lose. Besides team sports you can also do it in sports where there are lots of individuals such as NASCAR.

Parlay: While this type of bet is risky it can pay off if you play your odds right, pun intended. A parlay is where you put one bet on a series of games all lumped into one. The more games involved the higher the risk. Here is a good example of how they work.

Teaser: A teaser bet is a good option if you’re not sure if they will cover the spread. In this type of betting you simply subtract the actual spread from what you bet.

Prop bet: Want to bet on something other than the score of a game? With a prop bet you can literally make it anything besides who will win and some version of what the final score would be. It’s usually somebody is going to hit a home, three pointer, etc. depending on what the sport is. Or it could be that one of the athletes is going to achieve a certain stat.

Futures: Looking ahead to the next football season? With a futures bet your technically combining it with a different type of bet. It’s quite simply on a contest that is not going to happen for a while. This could be a good option for when your favorite team plays their rival or against a team’s athlete you don’t care for.

Live betting: This one is pretty self explanatory and easy to do. It quite simply means that you bet as the game goes but if you have a slow Internet connection you may want to do it well in advance to make sure the bet processes in time.

“Off the board”: Means that bets are off due to something unexpected that nobody could have reasonably anticipated. While this may not always be the case some examples could be an injury to one of the team’s star players or extreme weather for outdoor sports.
