Upset Special in Week 1 of the 2019 College Football Season
11 Oregon vs. #16 Auburn (at AT&T Stadium, Arlington, Texas)
Date: August 31st, 2019
It seems every year that Auburn head coach Gus Malzahn is on the coaching hot seat list. After another ho-hum 8-5 season, it seems it’s time for Malzahn to make a move. A win over an 11th-ranked Oregon in the season opener would be enough to quiet some of the critics. Malzahn returns 13 starters from last year but will have to break in a new quarterback. Redshirt freshman Joey Gatewood and true freshman Bo Nix are expected to play, but the more important thing for whichever guy is in is the fact that Auburn returns all five starters on the offensive line.
Oregon has a very good quarterback in Justin Herbert (6-6, 230) and returns eight starters total on offense. The Ducks top two rushers, C.J. Verdell and Travis Dye, combined for over 1,700 yards rushing. Where the Tigers may have an advantage is on defense where defensive coordinator Kevin Steele returns seven starters on a unit that gave up just 19.2 points (14th nationally) per game last season.
